Here is a detailed list of frequently asked questions regarding Kaillera and SCD-supported emulators. If this page does not answer your questions, please post in the help forum. For support on emulators other than the ones we support, please consult with that emulator's homepage.
Q: I see people's names as links. How do I do that?
A: It's easy. Just type \\\ (not //) in front of your name, like this: \\\MyName.
Q: Does Kaillera support netplay through firewalls?
A: Usually, yes. If not, you should check your Firewall Settings for a "game mode," or "exceptions list," for feature and enable either for Kaillera. If all else fails, simply turn off your firewall while using Kaillera, and turn it back on when done.
Q: I tried to connect, and couldn't get a server list. After trying SCD's IP address, I still couldn't connect. I tried going to Kaillera's site, but it kept timing out. Why is this happening to me?
A: I'm happy to tell you that this is NOT your, nor your machine's, fault. Kaillera.com keeps a "master serverlist" on its site. When the site crashes, so does the serverlist. When Kaillera can't access this serverlist, it crashes too! There is only one thing you can do about this issue: use a version of Kaillera that connects to another site's serverlist. At www.anti3d.com, you can find their version of Kaillera in the downloads section. When you get it, replace your old kailleraclient.dll with this one. You should be able to connect without any problems now.
Q: What is "ping," and how does it affect me?
A: Your computer checks servers by sending a "beep" to them, and bouncing it back to you. The time it takes to do this is called your "ping," and it is measured in milliseconds ( abbreviated "ms," this is equal to 0.001 second ). The lower your ping is, the better the gameplay over Kaillera. SCD tournament rules usually require a ping of 150 or better. Here is a simple chart of your gameplay exerience for your ping speed.
(Remember, during a kaillera game, all players get the same performance as the player in the game with the highest ping.)
100ms or less = Smooth, lag-free gameplay. There are very little to no frame-skips, however input lag is noticeable. 100 ms = 0.1 second = 6 frames of lag.
100-150ms = Slight lag. 6-9 frames of lag. Very noticeable. Frame-skipping still should not happen.
150-200ms = Moderate lag. 9-12 frames of lag. Gameplay will be slower, frames will skip, and buttons will need to be pressed earlier.
200ms or more = Heavy lag. Gameplay will be sluggish, frames skip at an intolerable rate, and buttons must be pressed early and carefully.
(Many players find this rate of ping intolerable.)
Q: My ping is very high. What can I do to fix it?
A: There are a few things you can do. First of all, try closing any other programs you have running, especially those that use the Internet (e.g. IM services, downloads, web browsers). Location is also another factor. The further away from a server you are, the higher the ping (Note: Most Europeans can connect to the SCD New York server with a ping under 100, though this is highly dependent on the speed of their Internet connection). Also, make sure you are on some kind of high-speed Internet, because dial-up simply can't handle all the packets flying back and forth between you and the server.
Q: What versions of ROM's should I use for an SCD tourney?
A: Only the version of the ROM that we provide on our site is accepted for tournaments. This is to prevent desynchronization. Typically, ROMs with suffixes of (U) or (JUE), or any (stuff) with "U" in it, will work just fine. Download from our Downloads section to ensure that your ROMs will work.
Q: When I try to host a game, why don't my available games show up? (Gens emulator)
A: First, make sure all your ROM's are in one folder, preferably near your emulator, and entitle that folder "ROMs". Now, run one of your games offline, then restart Gens, and start Kaillera. You should now be able to host all the games that are in that folder.
Q: Can spectators watch a game over Kaillera? (Gens emulator)
A: Only if the game has just one player. Otherwise, the controls will fail (This error is unexplainable.).
