Shadow is known as the ultimate life form. He was created by Prof. Gerald Robotnik, the grandfather of Dr. Ivo Robotnik
(aka Dr. Eggman) aboard the space colony ARK. He developed a fast friendship with the Professor's niece, Maria Robotnik, and often looked down to
Earth, wondering what the purpose to his life was. When the military attacked ARK, hoping to shut down the Ultimate Life Form project, Maria
sacrificed herself in order to let Shadow escape to Earth in an escape pod. On Earth, Shadow was captured by the military and placed in suspended
animation until Dr. Robotnik attacked the complex looking for "his grandfather's legacy" and freed him. As a reward for freeing him, Shadow granted
the doctor one wish, which was the domination of Earth. Shadow also has an alternative motive- to fulfill Maria's last wish, which was revenge on
Earth for causing her death.
Shadow led Robotnik to the ARK and the ultimate weapon: the Eclipse Cannon, which required seven Chaos Emeralds to reach full power. Joined by a
treasure hunter named Rouge the Bat, the three succeed in breaking into a military base and managing to gather six Emeralds, which was enough power to
destroy half the moon. They retrieve the last Emerald from Tails when Sonic leads an assault of Tails, Knuckles and (reluctantly) Amy on the ARK.
Sonic, however winds up being captured and supposedly destroyed. In their final duel, Shadow is defeated by Sonic, and the Eclipse Cannon is destroyed.
However, the ARK is set on a collision course with Earth, which means that Maria's revenge would be carried out anyway.
That is, until Amy Rose manages to remind Shadow that Maria's true last wish was for the people of Earth to be happy. (Note: Exactly why Shadow did
not remember this promise is never revealed. Some argue that Shadow's memories were altered by Gerald Robotnik. Some believe that the stress of seeing
Maria die and Shadow's own thirst for vengeance caused Shadow to subconsciously re-write history in his own mind in order to justify his actions.)
Shadow rushes to help Sonic and Knuckles seal the power of the Chaos Emeralds by battling the Bio-Lizard, the prototype of the Ultimate Life Form.
Though he wins, he cannot stop it from merging with ARK and continuing ARK's path towards Earth as the Final Hazard. Using the power of the Chaos
Emeralds, he transforms with Sonic into Super Shadow, and together they destroy Final Hazard and use Chaos Control to stop the free-falling ARK from
destroying the Earth. However, Shadow uses the last of his energy to do so, and falls to Earth. He is assumed to be dead.
In the next game, Sonic Heroes, Rouge discovers that Shadow is alive, and in a stasis tube located in the deepest part of one of Dr. Eggman's bases.
After saving Rouge from a rampaging robot called E-123 Omega, it is revealed that Shadow has amnesia and cannot remember anything before his release
from the stasis tube. He joins forces with Rouge and Omega to form Team Dark and hunt down Dr. Eggman.
After battling the Egg Albatross, and hearing Dr. Eggman proclaim that he "has no past to remember", Shadow discovers a half destroyed Shadow robot
and realises that he too might just be a robot. Despite this, he continues his mission, proclaiming that "even if I'm not real, I'm still the ultimate
life form, Shadow the Hedgehog!" They defeat Dr. Eggman's Egg Emperor and discover that the person they have been chasing is a fake Dr. Eggman.
Meanwhile, Rouge sneaks off to look for Dr. Eggman's treasure, and discovers a whole room filled with hundreds of cloned Shadow robots. Omega arrives
to destroy the room and everything in it, and Rouge finally confirms that the Shadow of Sonic Heroes is just a robot. However, Omega reassures her
that when you clone something, there is always an original, and the original may still exist.
When Metal Sonic transforms into Metal Madness, Shadow works with Rouge and Omega to distract Metal Madness long enough for Sonic to power up into his
Super Form. At the end of the game, he is last seen with Omega and the defeated Metal Sonic.
Shadow shares every ability of Sonic, meaning that they are truly rivals. His light trail is gold instead of blue.

Throughout Shadow's appearances both through cartoons and games he has similar relationship with particular characters.
Sonic the Hedgehog
Shadow is known as a duplicate to Sonic. They look alike, they have the same battle styles, and they have tremendous amounts of speed. Shadow hates this "infuriating hedgehog", so to speak, and always had to encounter Sonic in all his adventures.
Miles "Tails" Prower
Shadow knows about Sonic's small and best friend. Whenever he encountered Sonic, Tails was usually there. Therefore, he had good amounts of information on Tails, but never really messed with him.
Knuckles the Echidna
Shadow has made contact with this red echidna. And since Knuckles is the forever protector of the Master Emerald, Shadow was always there knowing that he won't let him get the Chaos Emeralds to easily.
Dr. Eggman
Dr. Eggman has awakened Shadow. So, Shadow gave him a wish. Now, whenever Shadow sees Eggman, he considers him as an enemy other then a friend.
Rouge the Bat
Shadow and Rouge are BFF's in my eyes. Rouge always tries to help Shadow out whenever he loses his memory or needs some consoling.
E-123 Omega
When Rouge activated the capsule in Eggman's lair to set the SUPER SEKRET Treasure free, E-123 Omega shot bullets at rapid fire while screaming "ALL EGGMAN'S ROBOTS MUST BE DESTROYED!" When Rouge broke up the fight between them. They became partners.
Silver the Hedgehog
Silver mistakened Shadow as Mephiles, a dark character from the future.
Emerl "Gizoid"
While Shadow was created by Gerald, there was an ancient robot founded by Gerald. It was "The Gizoid" who was later renamed as Emerl. Shadow had to help raise and teach Emerl fighting abilities, after he decided to destroy him.
Amy Rose
Amy mistakened Shadow as Sonic. Now Shadow thinks of them as a couple.
Jump - He can jump on top of enemies, which destroys them. Or he can jump to higher areas. Homing Attack - A mid air action, he homes in on springs, rings, or enemies, and collects or destroys them. Roll - Shadow simply rolls.... Spindash - Shadow charges up, and releases speed while rolling at fast speeds, allowing him to destroy enemies. Light Dash - He can home in on rings, and collects a trail of them at a blink of an eye. Ancient Light - He charges up as if he uses a spindash, but energy appears and can do the same thing that Light Dash effect can do, but instead of rings, it's with badnicks..... Somersault - He can perform a somersault, and kick his opponent. Flame Somersault - Performs a somersault, but has a flame effect. Grind - He grinds on a rail. Speed Boost - Shadow can only perform this ability in multiplayer mode. He increases his speed for a short period of time.
Unplayable Abilities
Chaos Control - He warps time and space to get to any area at the speed of light. In multiplayer, this ability can also freeze the opponent for 10 to 20 seconds. Chaos Spear - He uses the energy from a chaos emerald to have beams of quick energy damage the opponent. This ability can be used in multiplayer.
Sonic Heroes
Jump - He can jump on top of enemies, which destroys them. Or he can jump to higher areas. Homing Attack - A mid air action, he homes in on springs, rings, or enemies, and collects or destroys them. Roll - Shadow simply rolls.... Spindash - Shadow charges up, and releases speed while rolling at fast speeds, allowing him to destroy enemies. Grind - He grinds on a rail. Somersault - He can perform a somersault, and kick his opponent. Triangle Jump - Can jump from wall to wall to get to an unreachable area(in regular jumping terms). Black Tornado - Can create a tornado that can cause him and the team to get up a pole, or destroy enemies around you. Leader Switch - can switch the position of leader on his team. Chaos Inferno - Team Dark's team blast ability. Uses the Chaos Emerald to freeze time for 10 seconds to everything around you except your team, while E-123 Omega uses a tremendous blast in 360 degree angle to destroy opponents around you.
Sonic Battle
Shadow Run - Run ability. Shadow Dash - Travels much faster for a short period of time. Shadow Jump - Jumps in the air pretty high, but not very far. S. Teleport - Can warp him self forward everytime you press the A button. But gets closer to the ground. Shadow Guard - His protection. Powered by a Chaos Control. Shadow Heal - Shadow's heal ability. He heals at a slow rate. Shadow Chop - Shadow first attack. Attacks quickly and with force. Shadow Kick - Shadow's second attack. Attacks with a quick High Spin Kick. Shadow B. Kick - Shadow's third attack. Attacks with a quick reverse spin kick. C. Nightmare - Shadow's heavy attack. Using the power of Chaos Control, he grinds his fists to distort space, to attack and knock opponents away. Chaos Upper - Shadow's Upper attack. Uses the same effect as C. Nightmare, but only uses one fist. Shadow Slider - Shadow's Dash Attack. He uses the fire from his air shoes to attack the opponent. Shadow Rocket - Shadow's Air Attack. He performs a downwards kick in midair. He gain momentum by rolling in the air. Shadow Eagle - Shadow's pursuit attack. He takes down opponents with a downwards Spin Kick. Chaos Magic - Shadow's ground shot. He hits the opponents with distorted space created with Chaos Control Air C. Magic - Shadow's air shot. Same effect as the Chaos Magic, but only in the air. Roaming Chaos - Shadow's ground trap. He creates a spot of distorted space. Air R. Chaos - Shadow's Air Trap. Does the same as the Roaming Chaos. Shadow Style - Shadow's fighting pose.
